WorldSpace now in Mumbai

2003-07-16 Digital satellite radio service WorldSpace recently announced the launch of its services in Mumbai. The service is being offered at an introductory price of Rs 399 for a period of six months.

WorldSpace is a global system for satellite-based digital audio and data broadcasting and has about 29 channels, including 14 premium channels. Andy Ras-Work, president and COO, WorldSpace, said at a press conference in Mumbai that with over two dozen exclusive channels, WorldSpace will cater to particular genres of music like jazz, rock, pop, western classical, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam, providing listeners a wide variety of choice.

Talking about the competition from FM radio stations, Ras-Work said, FM channels “cater to local stuff” while pay radio was predominantly about music and global information.

WorldSpace, which has a worldwide subscription base of about 2.6 lakh, has partnered with a number of broadcasters including Radio Indigo from BPL Innovision, KL Radio (Tamil), Farishta (old Hindi), Le Jhoom (Bollywood) and Gandharv (Indian Classical) from Praser Trade.
