TRAI to issue recommendations on net, broadband next month

2004-01-29 The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will issue recommendations on accelerating the growth of the Internet and broadband to the Government in the next three weeks. It will also issue the final consultation paper on unified licensing over the next “couple of weeks,” TRAI officials said on the sidelines of an open house on the net and broadband.

Cable operators, who have now come under the purview of TRAI, raised concerns about being “wiped out” by large private telecom operators in the open house. Some of them asked TRAI to “arrange for educational sessions on technological advances”, reported a business daily. TRAI chairman Pradip Baijal and member DPS Seth asked them to file their written responses on the issues listed in the consultation paper in the next few days.

The media report stated some Internet service providers demanded that TRAI should allow Internet telephony via PC-to-PSTN (public service telephone network) connectivity and vice-versa. They also demanded introduction of termination charges on the same terms as that of fixed line and wireless operators.
