IDEA hits 1-million subscriber mark in Maharashtra

IDEA Cellular claims to have achieved yet another landmark. It has become the first operator to hit the 1-million subscriber mark in the Maharashtra circle. In fact, IDEA Maharashtra has witnessed unprecedented growth when compared with operators in the other telecom circles in India, says a company release. It has grown both in the pre-paid and post-paid segments in Pune, Goa, Nagpur, Nasik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Solhapur, Ulhasnagar and many upcountry locations. Currently, the company holds 60 per cent of the cellular market share in the state.
Vikram Mehmi, chief executive officer, IDEA Cellular Ltd, says, Today, every third cell user in Maharashtra is an IDEA customer and we have demonstrated our superiority in coverage, quality of service and customer care, thus attracting cell users to choose our services.
The cellular service provider has a robust distribution network of over 10,000 dealers and retailers spanning ABC cities across Maharashtra and Goa. IDEA also provides one-on-one service to customers through over 50 IDEA n U outlets spread across 34 districts, over 235 towns/villages and 2,270 km of highway coverage.
Elaborating the companys plans, Mehmi says, We plan to invest Rs 300 crore in the new financial year for network expansion and quality upgradation, besides upgrading our Maharashtra circle network to GPRS by May 2004.
