1st infotainment Channel in Kannada Makes an Impressive Debut

Launched during end of February, Saral Jeevan gets a robust start on the rating charts. Probably the 1st Kannada channel in a decade to start with 2 digit ratings on 1st week itself. Though the channel is 1st of its kind and can’t be directly compared with news channels and GECs, as a new channel in the block tent to get comparisons with channels that launched in the recent past, which are News Channels that went on air in last 6-7years. Saral Jeevan launch makes impact in many ways than one; for instance the 7 week average Time Spent (ATS) of Saral Jeevan is higher to over 10 news channels and next only to market leader in the segment. In fact the latest week Time Spent places Saral Jeevan above all news channels. The GRPs/TVTs of the channel in urban markets too is well above half of news channels.

Saral Jeevan telecasts non-fiction programming with a focus on mythology, history, travel and insights from Indian heritage & culture. Channel philosophy is to present inspiring, motivational and factual content that is positive in nature.

With crux of the programming being developed from research based factual content, infotainment, in general, has been a niche and upper SEC viewers’ domain (NCCS AB). And the regional language infotainment too seems to be in same direction. The chunk of numbers for Saral Jeevan is coming from Urban (Bangalore & 1-10 lac towns of the state).

Keep aside the ratings, Saral Jeevan proved many conventional thinkers wrong. For instance, the team of Saral Jeevan is about one third of a news channel. The amount of time that gone in to launch the channel is almost 50% of other Kannada TV launches. The channel got its 95% cable distribution in first 10days of operation. Marketing was innovative and low on costs too.

With an impressive start, Saral Jeevan is now busy fixing the important pillar in the system; the sales force. Jaideep Vishwanathan, who served as GM, Sales of West Region at Suvarna News, has joined Saral Jeevan to head Mumbai region sales. Punith Kumar, who was Regional Sales Manager Samaya News, will join to take care of Karnataka Sales. Soon there will be a team in action in Delhi, yet another important zone for television sales.
