ESPN acquires Cricinfo.com

ESPN has acquired Cricinfo from Wisden group. With this acquisition ESPN has furthered strengthened its global online presence.

ESPN has acquired the popular cricket website, cricinfo.com from the Wisden Group, which owned it till date.

This acquisition reconfirms ESPN’s interest in the online space as well as cricket. The company already has several online initiatives such as ESPN.com - the U.S.’s premier online sports destination; ESPNdeportes.com - the Spanish-language sports website in the US and ESPNsoccernet.com - the English-language football website. Cricinfo will be fourth in the list.

Russell Wolff, managing director, ESPN International, says, “Growing our business in the on-line world is vital for us to serve sports fans. Cricinfo is a tremendous property with a great fan base and it will be a strong addition to ESPN.”

Cricinfo.com, the website has earned its name in the space. Founded in 1993, the website has regular features, in-depth statistics on each of the 3,000 international, and 45,000 first class cricketers to have played the game, but its success and fame also came in for its ball-by-ball live coverage of all test and one day matches. The site now reaches out to more than seven million users every month.

Tom Gleeson, managing director, Cricinfo, says, “The relationship between ESPN and Cricinfo has been for a few years now, and this acquisition will further spurt the growth of Cricinfo, with ESPN’s expertise in providing online sports content and also marketing sports and online properties.”

ESPN’s digital media initiatives combine to deliver an industry-leading combination of live and on-demand sports events; up-to-the-minute sports news and information; scores, statistics and analysis; extensive on-demand and downloadable video and audio programming; fantasy sports, and video games across Web, mobile and other non-linear platforms.
