CEO, Balaji Telefilms, quits; Vikram Malhotra joins as COO, Balaji Motion Pictures

R Karthik has quit the company after 12 years. Malhotra comes in from Kingfisher Airlines, where he headed the marketing function.

A re-structuring is underway at Balaji Telefilms. Following the exit of two of its CFOs (including Sandeep Jain), R Karthik, chief executive officer, has also resigned.

Karthik, who was the CEO since April 2007, says that he will continue to be a part of the media and entertainment industries.

Speaking to afaqs!, Karthik says, "I've learnt a lot of things at Balaji in the 12 years that I've spent here. I wish to take those learnings to a new place."

Having an experience of 14 years in the media industry, Karthik has spent about 12 years of it at Balaji. He started at the media house as a senior marketing executive and rose to be its chief operating officer and eventually, CEO.

However, with numerous changes in the core team, Karthik chose to look for new opportunities. Though there have been offers from within the media and entertainment space, Karthik says that he hasn't made a decision yet.

Vikram Malhotra has been roped in as chief operating officer, Balaji Motion Pictures. The news has been confirmed by senior officials at Balaji Motion Pictures. Malhotra, however, was not available for comment.

Earlier, Malhotra was head, marketing, Kingfisher Airlines.

Ajit Thakur was the previous chief executive officer at Balaji Motion Pictures. He quit in July this year to join Multi Screen Media as business head.

Malhotra spent close to four years at Kingfisher Airlines and was an integral part of the launch of its international flights. He also took care of the Force India Formula One Team.

With about 10 years of experience in the industry, Malhotra was group marketing manager at the UB (United Breweries) Group prior to taking up the position at Kingfisher. He has also worked as product manager at Tata Communications and as brand manager and national sales manager at SC Johnson India.

Malhotra is a management graduate from the University of Mumbai. He graduated in 1999.

  • From Rashi Bhushan, Sat 24 Oct 2009 01:36:59 AM I dont agree with you my friend, I think the mix of corporate's with the bollywood scenario in India , will not only make it worthy on a National level, but on an International level as well, with of course their right blend of knowledge, experience and skills. Dont confuse that a corporate wouldnt be able to pursue the " building relationships" and establish personal contact.... i guess this is one of the main reasons why Companies are now more focussing on building relationships than just providing products to them- it is the need of the hour....
I guess with other big names u've mentioned - they didnt have such a skilled and witty person like Mr. Malhotra.... i guess times would be changing for more avenues for Balaji .... with new potentials, scope and facing a series of great opportunities making a headstart in the impossible situations to get accomplished !
    Cheers and good luck !

  • From Gaurav Dhar, Fri 23 Oct 2009 10:23:00 AM In today’s scenario where Corporate’s have got into Film Business, the biggest problem is that Film Business does not operate like a so called corporate ladder, its more of personal contact and relationship. The same actor will work for less money with a particualr producer but will take more from a corporate. Reliance,Sony pictures, Warner Brothers have all failed in the box office primarily because of the corporate lingoes and poor knowledge of cinema and how will a corporate - marketing guy understand the pulse & making of hindi cinema, the distributor sharks in bihar, MP, UP…..structure of cinema….when u see your film in a trial..whether the films is slow, needs a shorter edit…extra song..etc…the right team for a particular project…handling and cajoling actors..etc..
Anyways as they say we are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations. I hope the right people take note of it.
