Company Brief

Mumbai, October 05, 2015

Contributing to India’s biggest campaign, ‘Swachh Bharat’, the leading bottle water company, Bisleri organized India’s largest collection of used plastic bottles on Sunday, 4th October 2015 at Kamgar Sports Ground, Elphinstone, Mumbai. The event witnessed collection of 23,538.9 kgs of used plastic bottles in an attempt to enter the Limca book of Records and Guinness World Record. The results will be announced after the statutory processes have been completed by the record authorities. Post the collection, the bottles were sent for recycling for making useful items like pillow fibre, caps, clothes and bags.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ramesh Chauhan, Managing Director, Bisleri International Pvt. Ltd said, “We started this initiative to raise awareness about PET recycling in India and contribute towards Swachh Bharat. Educating children helps bring about change and through this initiative we have reached out to hundreds of kids and schools in Mumbai. Furthermore, the kids have helped us spread the word by raising awareness among families. We aim to extend this initiative to other cities as well and involve more kids in creating a cleaner India.”

Bisleri’s eco-friendly initiative reached out to over 2 lakhs students in Mumbai and close to 100 schools through a school contact programme. Creating awareness amongst students, teachers and parents on the indispensable role of PET in our lives and the need for PET recycling; the activity encouraged kids to participate in the initiative by collecting used plastic bottles and contributing to a cleaner environment.

Over the decades, Bisleri has been successfully recycling tonnes of PET every year leading to fruitful ‘asset management’. Spearheaded by Mr. Ramesh Chauhan, PET recycling was started in 1995 to keep the environment clean. In the year 1999 Bisleri imported a machine from Japan to ensure effective recycling of PET. Ever since then, PET that was once regarded as a waste is now been treated as an asset. Lately, Bisleri has installed plastic crushing machines in key malls and partnered with corporates giants for collecting used PET.

In April 2013 Bisleri launched the Go Green initiative. Currently, 36 corporate offices in Mumbai are supporting the initiative by giving back used empty PET bottles for recycling and many more corporates are joining this initiative every month. Every year Bisleri helps to recycle approximately 1200 M. tons of PET. In 2014, a similar collection drive was initiated in schools to raise awareness about PET recycling.

The total collection is 23,538.9 kgs which is equal to 1 million bottles. Considering that the average size of each bottle is 10 inch, if a long chain of these bottles is made the spread will be as long as 250kms, which is almost equivalent to the distance from Mumbai to Pune and return.
