India has undoubtedly emerged as the worldˇ¦s leading destination with respect to outsourcing operations. While these primarily involved back-end IT-related work and call-centre services, the latest addition to the bouquet is the pre-media aspect. In this space till date, India has been the host for basic jobs like word processing, office presentations, desk-top publishing, scanning and document production. Today, India is rapidly progressing to the next level with many global giants entrusting the design and creative aspects of their companies to Indian organizations.
Indian firms have proved their mettle in strategic design and branding work. The two primary routes for offshore design work have been in terms of working for the client directly, or international consultancies and ad agencies outsourcing their high-volume work, in turn. This includes work like corporate identity implementation or typesetting.
One of the forerunners in this segment is OfficeTigerˇ¦s Creative Services division, a full-service branding consultancy specializing in creative, powerful and coordinated brands. Its core areas are print design, electronic presentations and interactive design. Creative Services is the design arm of OfficeTiger, a premier professional support services firm offering judgment-based, industry-focused solutions. Fuelled by RR Donnelley (one of the worldˇ¦s largest print & publishing house, providing print and print related services), OfficeTiger has a total headcount of 7700 employees. OfficeTiger serves Fortune 500 clients in the investment banking, printing and publishing, legal and real estate space across US and Europe. The Premedia service line at OfficeTiger is the largest contributor to its revenue pie.
Initially publishers used OfficeTiger Creative services to design execution, where they worked with designs that have been established. But with a new design studio, OfficeTiger migrates to a broader design capability and expects to do more high-end work, traditionally done in-house or outsourced to a domestic company.
The major drivers of off-shoring premedia services to India include:
„X More than 100 year history of domestic English publishing industry „X Favorable time zones „X Trained workforce proficient in English language, as well as in publishing „X Success stories of early pioneers like OfficeTiger „X Significant cost arbitrage
Quick facts:
The current publishing outsourcing revenue in the country is estimated at approximately $200 million and is expected to touch $1.1 billion by 2010. This verifies that the publishing BPO business is clocking at an annual growth of 30 per cent in India and with profit margins which vary between 30-40 per cent. A recent ValueNotes research shows that the number of employees in publishing outsourcing will grow 5.6 times by 2010.
