Car market leader Maruti Udyog Limited sold 536,301 vehicle units during financial year 2004-05, the highest ever annual sale since the company began operations over 21 years ago.

This annual sale figure includes exports of 48,899 units. Maruti's annual sale in 2004-05 represents a growth of 13.6 per cent over 2003-04.

During March 2005, the company sold 54,613 units, including 3,920 units of exports. This is the highest ever sale in a month by Maruti.

Maruti consolidated its leadership in the A 2 (premium compact) segment in the domestic market, with Alto growing by over 108 per cent in 2004-05 and emerging as India's largest selling passenger car model.

Sales in the A3 segment, comprising Esteem and Baleno models, grew by 109 per cent during the fiscal year.

Maruti Driving Schools
The company took a major step forward in its role as a corporate citizen by announcing a plan to set up state-of-the-art driving schools across the country. The first three of these schools -- in Bangalore, Kollam (in Kerala) and Chandigarh - have been inaugurated in the last days of the
fiscal.

While the existing Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) in Delhi, managed by Maruti, continued to make efforts to promote safe driving, work has started on setting up a second IDTR in Delhi.

Awards
During the year, Maruti earned further customer appreciation, being ranked first in J D Power Customer Satisfaction Survey for a record fifth year in a row.

The company was rated first also in J D Power Sales Satisfaction Survey, which measures customer satisfaction at the time of purchase of a car at company dealerships.

Maruti's Alto and Esteem models topped their categories in the J D Power Initial Quality Study 2004.

Besides, Zen and Esteem were ranked first in their respective categories in Total Customer Satisfaction Survey conducted by TNS Automotive.

WagonR and Esteem were ranked first in the J D Power APEAL Study.

Maruti was among India's five Most Respected Companies and ranked as the "Most Respected Automobile Company" in the Businessworld ratings.

R & D
On way to becoming Suzuki Motor Corporation's R and D hub for Asia outside Japan, Maruti introduced upgraded versions of the Esteem and Maruti 800, completely designed and styled inhouse.

This followed the successful face-lift of WagonR and Zen models, done inhouse during the previous fiscal (2003-04)

The company launched superior Bharat Stage III versions of most of its models, well before the Government deadline.

Maruti also set up a Centre for Excellence with a corpus of Rs 10 crore. This was done in collaboration with suppliers, who contributed an additional Rs 5 crore. The Centre provides consultancy and training support to Maruti's Suppliers and Sales Network to enable them to achieve world-class standards in Quality, Cost, Service and Technology Orientation.

Network
The record sales performance was ably supported by Maruti's dealerships. The new car sales network grew from 280 outlets to 325 during the year. These outlets covered 197 cities across the country.

Besides, 172 Maruti True Value outlets in 118 cities were engaged in the sale, purchase and exchange of pre-owned cars. This makes the True Value network the second largest for cars in the country, next only to Maruti's new car sales network.

The service network had a total of 1995 service outlets, covering 1052 cities.

New Investments
During the year, the Maruti-Suzuki partnership announced that it would make fresh investments in a new car manufacturing plant, an engine facility and a state-of-the-art test track in Manesar, Haryana.
