DQ rates HCL Infosystems as the largest PC manufacturer in India

HCL Infosystems, India's premier information enabling company, was rated as the number one PC manufacturer by DATAQUEST report on the Top 20 IT companies in the country in the ‘PCs and Notebooks’ segment. According to the report, HCL recorded an impressive growth in terms of unit shipments during the fiscal maintaining its lead in the desktop market with shipment of over 4.73 lakh units – acquiring 13.7% of the market. HCL sold almost 10% more than its nearest rival HP and way-ahead other players like IBM/Lenovo & Zenith.
As per the report, this growth is attributed to company’s aggressive plans to target B & C class cities and expand its distribution network. Other significant initiatives adding to this growth are launch of the low cost Ezeebee Pride priced at Rs. 12, 990 and high-end home PC called HCL Beanstalk Neo, complementing the Beanstalk range. HCL Beanstalk Neo was also country’s first desktop to come with Windows XP Media Center OS. HCL’s first of its kind PC on EMI scheme also played an important role by increasing the affordability index with middle-income group consumers.

The growth is also attributed to some of the large orders bagged by the company from some PSU clients, like commissioning of the country’s largest Internet backbone network for BSNL, large mandates from MTNL & other banks. From the government side, nodal agencies like Tamilnadu’ ELCOT went for large-scale installations.
"HCL made an impact by announcing a slew of offerings during both the price conscious budget buyers as well as the higher end offerings aimed at the high value segment" said the DATAQUEST Top20 Report 2005 on the company's performance.
