Ten Sports bags the telecast rights for the UEFA Champions League

Football fever is still high in India after the recent FIFA World Cup

Football fever is still high in India after the recent FIFA World Cup. This could prove to be beneficial for Ten Sports, which has bagged the telecast rights for the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League football in India for the next three seasons.

The deal, which will be effective from September 2006, will treat football fans to 1,000 hours of Europe’s leading football action.

The UEFA Champions League 2006-07 will be the 52nd edition of the club tournament. The live coverage of the Champions League matches on Ten Sports starts from September 12, 2006, till the final on May 23, 2007, at the Olympic Stadium, Athens.

What is interesting is that since 1955, there have been many contenders for the most coveted trophy in club football, the European Cup. And since 1992-93, when it was re-launched as the UEFA Champions League, the championship has become bigger and better. This season sees defending champions Barcelona face the best of teams such as England, Italy, Spain and Germany, among 31 others.

The League comprises three qualifying rounds, one group stage and four knockout rounds. The 16 teams that have directly qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League 2007 are AC Milan, Anderlecht, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Bordeaux, Celtic, Chelsea, FC Porto, Juventus, Manchester United, Lyon, Olympiacos, PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid, Sporting and Werder Bremen.
