The 2nd Awaaz
Consumer Awards were announced in the Capital on Tuesday, July 18, 2006. These awards rate brands in different categories, based on the consumers' preference for them.
SBI won three awards in various categories. It was selected as the most preferred brand among banks, mutual funds and home loan brands. Among financial institutions, the other brand which got two awards was ICICI. It was chosen the most preferred brand in the credit cards and auto loans categories.
Among consumer durables, LG won an award in the TV/washing machine/AC/PC category, while Godrej and Sony were chosen as the most preferred brands in the refrigerator and music system categories, respectively.
Among personal care brands, HLL took away four awards for cosmetics: Lakme won in the cosmetics category, Lux in the toilet soap category, Clinic Plus in the shampoo category, and Rin in the detergent category. Among the other personal care brands, Colgate was the most preferred toothpaste.
Pepsi seems to have left its biggest rival, Coca-Cola, behind, as it was selected the most preferred brand in the soft drink segment.
There were some surprises, too. The Life Corporation of India was selected in both the life insurance and non-life insurance categories.
In the food and beverages segment, ITC's Annapurna was selected in the branded 'atta' segment, and Tata Tea and Nescafe in the tea and coffee segments, respectively.
In the telecom sector, BSNL and Airtel were adjudged the most preferred landline and cellular service provider brand, respectively, while Nokia was voted the most preferred handset provider.
This year, a new category, paints, was introduced - it was won by Asian Paints.
In the travel and hospitality category, Kashmir was the best location for an Indian holiday, while Switzerland won the award in the international category. The recently rechristened Indian (formerly called Indian Airlines) was the best domestic carrier, while Air-India was voted the best liked airline for travel abroad.
For the record, the Awaaz Consumer Awards voice the opinion of 10,000 consumers of 39 product and service categories across 21 countrywide locations. Around 6,720 valid responses were taken into consideration to arrive at the scores. The research for the exercise was done by AC Nielsen ORG MARG.
