HBO to re-create the tsunami nightmare

HBO tries to create a differentiating factor by unveiling a two-part mini series based on the tsunami that struck on December 26, 2004

HBO, which usually is about action, classics, drama and romantic encounters, is traversing a different path. The movie channel will air a two-part mini series, ‘Tsunami – The Aftermath’, back to back, between 9pm and 12 midnight on December 26, 2006. The repeat telecast will be on December 30, 2006, at 4pm

‘Tsunami’ is a tale of personal loss, survival and hope. Inspired by true accounts, the mini series recounts the horrific details of the aftermath of the tsunami that struck the Andaman coast of Thailand on December 26, 2004. The show also pays tribute to the heroes of the tsunami such as relief workers, journalists and the Thai survivor, who, even after losing his entire family, tried to keep developers from seizing the village land. The documentary also shows how the meaning of life changed for many after the disaster.

The mini series is based on research and interviews by Morgan Abi and has been filmed in Phuket and Khao Lak in Thailand.

According to Shruti Bajpai, country manager, HBO, the programme doesn’t have any commercial value as such and it is not intended for any profits. But she feels that such shows will differentiate the channel from the rest.
