Sanjay Trehan to join NDTV Convergence as CEO

Trehan is moving from Times Internet, where he was working as vice-president, broadband and Web2.0

NDTV Convergence, which owns and operates websites such as Ndtv.com, Ndtvprofit.com, Ndtvjobs.com, and mobile information service 6388, has appointed Sanjay Trehan its chief executive officer beginning March 12.

Trehan, who will report to the board of directors at NDTV, will be responsible for steering growth for the group’s convergence media interests and for driving it into new media environments.

Recently, NDTV announced new appointments to head the group’s new growth ventures. Vikram Chandra will serve as chief executive officer and managing director of NDTV Networks PLC, a 100 per cent subsidiary incorporated in the UK. Smeeta Chakrabarti will be chief executive officer of NDTV Lifestyle. Rahul S Deshpande will be chief executive officer of NDTV Labs, the software and technology company.

Trehan can be termed a new media expert as he has spent the last eight years in leading online businesses. His last assignment was at Indiatimes.com, where he was vice-president, broadband and Web2.0. He was the force behind re-inventing Indiatimes in the broadband era, migrating its linear narrowband content to broadband-enabled multimedia content. He joined the Times Group in June 2005.

Commenting on his move from Indiatimes to NDTV Convergence, Trehan says, “This is a great opportunity to play a significant role in a new environment. There are a lot of brand values attached with this new challenge.”

Prior to Times Internet, Trehan was chief of the Internet division of ‘Hindustan Times’ (‘HT’). He joined HT Media in March 2001 and played an instrumental role in turning around the Internet division there; prior to his appointment, the division had been incurring losses.

Earlier, Trehan and his team launched Jaldi.com. In 2001, he quit Jaldi.com as COO and joined Razorfinish.com, a reverse auction site for travel, as vice-president. At Razorfinish, Trehan looked after marketing communications, content development and strategic alliances.

He has also worked in an advertising environment, beginning his career with Lowe (then Lintas) after acquiring a Master’s degree in history from St Stephen’s College.
