Biz, political mentors to play guest editor at CNBC Awaaz

CNBC Awaaz is to start a new series incorporating the who’s who of India Inc. and political circles, and other achievers, in a new series called ‘CNBC Awaaz Guest Editors’

Till now, having guest editors was a common phenomenon with national dailies, but now news channels seem to be heading in the same direction.

In a first, CNBC Awaaz is all set to launch a new series incorporating the who’s who of India Inc. and political circles, and other achievers, in a new series called ‘CNBC Awaaz Guest Editors’, which will be telecast starting May 23.

Says Sanjay Pugalia, editor, Awaaz, “We are inviting achievers and leaders from different facets of life to head our news desk for a day.”

What can a guest editor, a common phenomenon among newspapers, bring to a news channel, especially when he is at the helm of affairs for a single day?

“We are talking about industry leaders and political honchos. They will surely bring in a fresh perspective and break the routine,” he says.

Kishore Biyani
Pugalia cites the example of Kishore Biyani, the Sam Walton of Indian retailing and the first guest editor with the channel. Biyani headed the evening news meeting, patiently heard all the story ideas and presented his views before he pushed reporters on stories he thought exciting and slammed a few for run-of-the-mill ideas. Biyani, MD, Future Group, also thought of some stories that could be done by CNBC reporters.

One of Biyani’s ideas was to cover how a two metre length of cloth is converted into a shirt and the steps involved in adding value to it.

Kishore Biyani’s interaction with the news team will be telecast today at 9.30pm on the channel, while his news bulletin (editor’s choice) will be telecast at 8pm.

Pugalia adds, “We have aviation minister Praful Patel and Jyotindra Raje Scindia lined up as our next two guest editors for the series.” The series will be telecast once a month. At least seven different guests will feature as editors during the series.
