Business Bhaskar seeks first mover advantage in Indore, Raipur

The Hindi business daily will target not only the business class, but also people trading in commodities and the share market. The content will focus on commercial and financial matters and, to a lesser extent, general economics

Within a fortnight of the Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) edition, Business Bhaskar, the Hindi business daily from DB Corp. Ltd (DBCL), has launched editions in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and Raipur (Chhattisgarh) as well.

Speaking to afaqs!, Sanjeev Kotnala, assistant vice-president and national head, communication, DBCL, said, “It was logical for us to go to Indore and Raipur after Bhopal because of the strong business community presence in the two cities.”

The pink broadsheet has a cover price of Rs 1.50. It will target not only the business class, but also people trading in commodities and the share market. The content will focus on commercial and financial matters and, to a lesser extent, general economics.

Why was Bhopal chosen as the launch city? Kotnala says that it is a myth that Bhopal does not have people interested in financial news. There is a lot of concern about economic development. “Also, when experimenting with a product, you have to start with a place where you have the best talent and resources available, and Bhopal is the Bhaskar stronghold.”

The Bhopal and Indore editions have a claimed print run of 20,000 copies each. The Raipur edition, covering Durg and Bhilai as well, has an initial print run of 8,000 copies. Kotnala agrees that it is a small number and “not what the industry expects from the Bhaskar Group. But keeping the needs of the reader and the growing advertiser demand in mind, we would certainly like to have the first mover advantage.”

As of now, the business paper does not have any competition in the business daily domain.

According to informed sources, DBCL is considering a proposal to launch Business Bhaskar to cover the entire Bhaskar turf (Punjab, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh) by the end of November. Immediate destinations for Business Bhaskar are probably Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh), Ahmedabad (Gujarat) and Ludhiana (Punjab).
