Radio City leads in Mumbai; status quo in Delhi, Kolkata and Bengaluru

Radio Mirchi and Big FM are competing fiercely in Kolkata. Bengaluru has a clear market leader in Big FM

The Radio Audience Measurement (RAM) data for Week 44 is out and Mumbai has a new leader. The top two positions remain unchanged in Kolkata, Bengaluru and Delhi, though the race is heating up in Kolkata.

Mumbai

The competition has thrown up a new leader for the Diwali week with Radio City garnering 19.9 per cent market share – a growth of 3.7 percentage points over the previous week. Red FM has gone down to second spot, though it has increased its share by 0.1 point to 18.8 per cent.

The third position, which was held by Radio City in Week 43, is occupied by Big FM in the latest ratings. It has slipped from second spot and currently holds a share of 18.5 per cent. However, it has increased its market share by 0.3 percentage points over the previous week. Radio Mirchi retains fourth spot, though its share has eroded by 0.7 points over the previous week to 12 per cent.

Speaking to afaqs!, Rana Barua, executive vice-president and national head, programming and marketing, Radio City, says, “Our music being high on melody, while avoiding loud music, has struck the right chord with Mumbai listeners.”

In Mumbai, at No. 5 Air FM2 Gold has a market share of 8.6 percent, followed by Radio One with a share of 7.9 per cent. Fever FM at No.7 has a share of 5.8 per cent, followed by AIR FM Rainbow with a share of 3.1 per cent. Among other stations, Vividh Bharati has a 2.1 per cent, Meow FM –1.7 per cent share, and Akashavani –1.6 per cent share. (See data)

Delhi

Radio Mirchi continues to be the clear leader here, with a market share of 28.5 per cent in Week 44, an increase of 1.1 percentage points over the previous week. AIR FM Gold continues in second place with a market share of 14.3 per cent – decrease by 0.9 percentage points.

The third spot in the Capital is held by Fever FM with 11.6 per cent. At fourth position is Radio One, with 9.2 per cent market share. In Week 43, it was Red FM that held fourth position. In the latest week, its share is 8.4 per cent followed by Radio City at 7.5 per cent. Big FM is at 6.9 per cent, while AIR FM Rainbow has a share of 3.8 per cent.

Among other stations, Hit 95 FM has a share of 3.2 per cent, Vividh Bharati – 3.1 per cent share, and Meow FM – 3 per cent share. (See data)

Bengaluru

Big FM continues at the top with 24.4 per cent share, though its market share has fallen by 4.5 percentage points from Week 43. With an increase of 2.8 percentage points this week, Radio Mirchi continues in second spot with 16.9 per cent share.

“Our programming has a witty take on situations, which is in line with what the city represents,” says Sunil Kumaran, station head, Bengaluru, Big FM. Further, “we have stayed Kannadiga since the day of the station's inception, while the others around us experimented. This has given us a firm standing in the market.”

What makes a market leader? Kumaran points out that “its all about local connect”, and adds that to continue in that position, “one has to engage in newer platforms and maintain quality content”.

AIR FM Rainbow has moved up to third spot from fifth and finished the week with 12.3 per cent share, an increase of 3.2 per cent. Radio One has come down to fourth position with 12 per cent share, a fall of 1.3 percentage points.

Among other stations are S FM (8.7 per cent), Radio City (7.7 per cent), Fever FM (7.6 per cent), AIR FM1 Vividh Bharati (6.5 per cent), Radio Indigo ( 1.6 per cent), Gyan Vani (1.2 per cent), and Akashavani (0.8 per cent). (See data)

Kolkata

Indications are that the coming weeks will see a close fight for the top spot. Radio Mirchi has been leading the market and holds 19.8 per cent market share, down from the 21.6 per cent share it held in Week 43. Close on its heels is Big FM, trailing by just 1 percentage point, at 18.8 per cent.

Friends FM continues at third position with 15.6 per cent share, an increase of 1.2 points, while Red FM at No.4 has 9.5 per cent share.

In Kolkata, Fever FM has 8.3 per cent share, followed by Amaar FM with 7.9 per cent. Meow FM also has a 7.3 per cent share in Week 44.

Among other stations are AIR FM2 Gold (4.5 per cent), AIR FM Rainbow (4.4 per cent), Power FM (1.7 per cent), Akashavani Kolkata (1.4 per cent), and Vividh Bharati (0.9 per cent). (See data)
