Chowdhury's stint at Network18 began in March 2008. Earlier, he was chief marketing officer, Times Global Broadcasting.

Speaking to afaqs!, Chowdhury says, "Broadcast Media has undoubtedly kept me busy for the last two years. However, the decision to join Obopay is driven by the exciting opportunities offered by the telecom sector. The industry is posting double digit growth. With a population of 1.2 billion people, the real question is how many of them have a bank account and it's here that the mobile phenomenon comes into play."

He adds that Obopay is a start-up company and promises a challenging role to lead the company's expansion plans in the country. In his new role, he will be based in Mumbai.

Obopay is not Chowdhury's first stint with the telecom industry. In the past, he has handled marketing duties for Bharti Telecom (Mumbai) and was also chief operating officer, West Bengal, Tata Teleservices. He has also worked with PepsiCo International, NY as strategy and channel development manager.

Chowdhury has 15 years of experience and has worked with organisations such as Nabisco (a consumer goods company), Federated Department Store (a conglomerate which owns department stores including Macy's and Bloomingdale's).

Chowdhury, an alumnus of St. Xavier's Collegiate School, pursued economics and marketing at the College of Wooster. He has also completed executive programmes from the University of California, Berkeley and the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad.
