Saavn Plays Radio on Twitter

The online music streaming service will let users request songs in real time with just one tweet.

Online music service, Saavn has tied-up with social media platform Twitter to launch @SaavnRadio, a radio station powered by Twitter. The new station is available for streaming on Saavn's Internet radio product, Saavn Radio.

The @SaavnRadio lineup will be curated by Saavn users through Twitter's real-time information network, and will refresh every few minute. To directly influence the station's programming, users can tweet @SaavnRadio to request a song from Saavn's catalog of Indian and English music.

The station will also update based on Saavn users' shared listening activity on Twitter. Explicit requests will be prioritized over shared songs in each refresh interval, and users will receive tweet as a confirmation of their request being played.

"Our listeners regularly tweet their songs and playlists, so this is our way of using Twitter activity to drive music programming on Saavn. Twitter is the global platform for live, public conversations, and music and entertainment are a big part of it. That music conversation now turns Tweets into a radio station in real time for Saavn users. It's a defining collaboration and just the beginning of the social music experience we are building," says Rishi Malhotra, co-founder and CEO, Saavn.

"With @SaavnRadio, we are excited to amplify music accessibility and music discovery for our Indian users all over the world," adds Arvinder Gujral, director, Business Development, India and South East Asia, Twitter.

@SaavnRadio is available for streaming on Saavn Radio for Web, iOS and Android. The company had launched its Internet radio service last December, offering Hindi and English music stations according to mood, genre, season, artist, or track. Saavn Radio is free for all users and ad-free for Saavn Pro subscribers.

Founded in 2006, Saavn has a catalog of approximately 2 million songs in partnerships with more than 900 record labels, including T-Series, Tips, YRF, Saregama, Universal, Sony and Warner Music. The platform also has music in 11 regional languages.

With Saavn Pro, users can listen to music ad-free and offline. And through partnerships with Apple, Google, Facebook, Shazam, and now Twitter, Saavn reaches more music fans than any other South Asian music service. Headquartered in New York City, Saavn has offices in Silicon Valley, New Delhi, and Mumbai.
