Saying that the company misled him about the nature of the product, the James Bond actor told People, an American celebrity news portal and weekly magazine, that as per the contract he was to advertise only a single product which was presented to him as "an all-natural breath freshener/tooth whitener containing neither tobacco, supari, nor any other harmful ingredient".

After the campaign got trolled and generated a wave of negative comments on social media, Pan Bahar had issued a brief statement to the press, via email clarifying that there is 'No Tobacco No Nicotine' content in any of the products under this brand name.

However, according to People magazine, Brosnan has also accused Pan Bahar of "grossly manipulating" media outlets to falsely present him as a brand ambassador for their entire product range, (as opposed to advertising a single product - the mouth freshener) something he says is in violation of his contract.

In an exclusive statement to the weekly, Brosnan clarified that he has the "greatest love and affection for India and its people". "As a man who has spent decades championing women's healthcare and environmental protection, I was distressed to learn of Pan Bahar's unauthorised and deceptive use of my image to endorse their range of pan masala products. I would never have entered into an agreement to promote a product in India that is dangerous to one's health."

"Having endured, in my personal life, the loss of my first wife and daughter as well as numerous friends to cancer, I am fully committed to supporting women's healthcare and research programs that improve human health and alleviate suffering," he added.

The campaign that broke on October 7 was created by DDB Mudra for Pan Bahar.
