Sales Promotions Roundup

Breaking away from the ‘durables-intensive’ pattern set over the past few weeks, last week’s sales promotions were a good mix, though dominated by the F&B industry.

NEW DELHI, Sept 02

Let's start the past week's roundup of sales promotions as usual - consumer durables first. In Delhi, Thomson CTVs were cheaper by Rs 3,000, while a Thomson Altima 580 music system got consumers a GE cordless phone. In Ahmedabad, a Kenwood XD-V323 music system had seven VCDs free.

Bangalore was one metro that had it rich last week. The purchase of an Usha fan got Bangaloreans a wall clock worth Rs 150. A similar offer came from Bajaj fans in Bangalore, Mangalore and Mysore - an Ajanta wall clock for Rs 25 (as against the MRP of Rs 99) on buying a Bajaj Regal fan. The purchase of a Prestige Premium non-stick cookware item got the buyer a Prestige vacuum flask worth Rs 127. While an iron worth Rs 375 came with every Johnson Mantra and Ballerina mixer.

Onto food and beverages. On buying a new 27-gm pack of Perk Real chocolate and presenting the ad coupon to the retailer, consumers got a free pack of Perk Slims worth Rs 5. This offer ran through the week and is valid in Delhi and the NCR till Sep 05, 2000. In Mumbai and adjoining areas, on returning the empty 250-gm pack of Manikchand Urmi and Parimal tea, consumers became eligible to win prizes that included Kenstar Super Mixer, Neelam 21-piece dinner sets and Boss Hand Blenders, among others.

Select Vadilal ice creams were cheaper in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. A 15-lt jerry can of Dhara Health cooking oil was retailed at a special price of Rs 520. Maggi Sweet & Sour noodles were cheaper by Rs 2 in select cities. Again, in select cities, a 5-lt bottle of Gemini sunflower oil had a 16-lt Cello bucket worth Rs 75 as a freebie.

The promo war between the cola giants heated up. In select cities, Coca-Cola launched a scratch-card contest, with prizes that include cash totaling Rs 3 lakh, 50 watches, 500 caps and 400 T-shirts. This offer is valid till Sep 30, 2000. In Ahmedabad, Pepsi came up with a unique promo, where Pepsi guzzlers had to dip a card that came with Pepsi in a chilled liquid to know what prize was in store for them. Prizes included a dinner for two at a five-star hotel, tickets for two to six blockbusters at the Pepsi Times Club Fest and invites for four at Shanku's Water Park, among others.

A series of promotions from departmental store chain Nanz in Delhi and the NCR offered the following: A Lux Pink 75-gm soap worth Rs 10.50 with every 500-gm pack of Brooke Bond Red Label tea/with every 500-gm pack of Surf Excelmatic. A 1-lt pack of Nestle Pure Milk was not only cheaper by Rs 2 at Nanz, a Nestle Shaker came free with it. Two 1-kg packs of Rajma Chitra got shoppers a 100-gm pack of either Nanz Haldi, Nanz Dhania or Nanz Red Chilli powder. Finally, a 200-gm pack of Amul Ghee was the freebie with every 5-lt jar of Dhara Health.

In textiles and apparel, there was a 25-per cent discount on the entire Charlie range, including jeanswear, in West Bengal. While in Delhi, Peter England shirts were cheaper by 20 per cent.

An overview of other significant promotions of the past week:

The global Standard Chartered credit card had a Triple Benefit Offer - thrice the Rewards Plus points, 50 per cent off on the first year's annual fee and Zero-entrance fee. This offer was applicable in select cities. In Mumbai, the Kaun Banega Carpati contest from SatyamOnline continued as from last week. The contest closes on Sep 10, 2000.

In the Capital, teachers and their families (a total of five people, including the teacher) could gain entry to Appu Ghar amusement park's rides and the special attraction, Oysters, for just Rs 50 (as against the regular cost of Rs 385). This offer is valid till Sep 05, 2000.

The contest from Four Square cigarettes continued as from last week. Prizes included four Ford Ikons, 16 Akai Home theatre systems, 64 Philips CD players and much more. The Wine ‘n' Dine offer from Citibank carried on from last week. In personal care, on filling up the coupon available with a bottle of Dabur Vatika hair oil, consumers became eligible to win a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. And finally, in Delhi, a Bajaj scooter continued to be Rs 1,500 cheaper.
