In a tightly contested grand finale of Amrita TV's reality show, Best Actor, held at Calicut on January 25, with four finalists vying for the coveted crown, the title of Oxywash Best Actor was won by Surabhi Lekshmi, a BA Bharatanatyam student at Sree Sankaracharya University, Kalady, Kerala. Surabhi, 20, a native of Calicut, has been a topper in youth festivals.
The Best Actor enjoys a free US trip to Hollywood studio and sessions with two top celebrities in the field of theatre arts along with a trip to Schools of Drama in Yale and New York, and an opportunity to participate in auditions at Broadway ;and also opportunities to work with prominent film makers in Malayalam
The runner-up who won an Alto car was Sidhartha Siva, 22, from Thiruvalla. Sidharth, pursuing MA in English Literature from Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla has been engaged in direction and acting and also released a collection of poems.
The show, Best Actor, a first-of-its-kind in Indian television, to nurture and promote acting talent, was being telecast from Sept. 2007 on prime time running into 105 episodes, Monday through Friday on Amrita TV.
Out of the 20 contestants who were shortlisted from the thousands who appeared for screen tests in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Kerala, the four finalists who reached the finals through an elimination process of public SMS voting were Deepika, Gireesh, Sidharth and Surabhi.
The other two finalists were Deepika, a BSc student of PSMO College, Tirurangadi with no acting experience, and Gireesh, an amateur drama and mimicry artist working for a jewellery firm. .
Without exception what all the four finalists cherish the most during their stint with the show, were the grooming and training workshops and orientation that they underwent during the shooting of Best Actor, as they were exposed to interactions with eminent actors, directors and specialists from the arena of cinema and theatre.
As part of the Finale, Amrita TV honoured a few veterans by way of Mementos in recognition of their "Remarkable Contributions in the field of Theatre Arts", namely: K.T.Mohammed, Kozhikode Santhadevi, Nilambur Aysha, Vasu Pradeep, K.R.Mohandas and Ahwan Sebastian.
The finals were held at Calicut on January 25, in the presence of an invited audience of eminent persons from cinema, theatre arts, media, corporates, press and theatre enthusiasts & aspirants-besides friends, families and fans of contestants.
