Kerela, June 02, 2009

On the occasion of World Environment Day, on June 5 ,Amrita TV has designed an exclusive menu of progammes, through linkages with United Nations, Greenpeace, Centre for Science and Environment, Ministry of Environment, among others. The programme-mix has a national as well as a global perspective, since environmental issues gradually transcend national boundaries as is seen by the impact of climate change and global warming.

The day starts with Amrita TV's longest running morning show( 1510 episodes till date), "Udayamritham", featuring a special episode at 6.30 am to commemorate World Environment Day.United Nations Television(UNTV) "21st Century Series" which reflects some of the most important issues affecting the world, and our lives today, puts a spotlight on the world's most underreported stories. Amrita TV has put together three such stories for telecast on June 5 at 10.30 am under the capsule, "Ee Thalam Nilakkumo".

The first of the UNTV videos to be telecast on Amrita TV is "Sustainable Development in the Amazon" .Described as the "lungs of the Earth", the Amazon rainforest is seen as one the world’s most important ecological treasures. To save the rainforest, Brazil’s national government and local communities have teamed up to experiment with new techniques and strategies … one of which actually includes cutting down trees.

The next in the UNTV's "21st Century Series" being telecast by Amrita TV is "Saving Black Sea Dolphins with Sound" .The numbers of this extremely popular and intelligent animal continue to dwindle in spite of commercial hunting bans. Many get accidentally caught every year in fishing nets all over the globe. A Program funded through the UN Development Programme is distributing acoustic devices to fishermen in the Black Sea to help keep dolphins at bay.

The third short film from UN is "Bali:Rejuvenating the Reefs".Indonesia is home to 50,000 square kilometers of coral reef -almost one fifth of the world's total. Known as the "tropical forests of the ocean", these reefs are home to a rich diversity of animals and plants. It's an abundant and beautiful ecosystem, but one that is also under threat.

A PSA by Greenpeace "'Breathe In ,Breathe Out" is a campaign for a world we can breathe in. Another PSA ''Rainwater Harvesting'' directed by acclaimed actor, director, Nandita Das, for Centre for Science and Environment, Delhi, focuses on the immense potential of conserving rain water to meet the water security crisis in our country.

Amrita TV has dubbed all globally telecast videos into Malayalam
