Amrita TV’s special programmes for Independence Day

Trivandrum, August 13, 2009

Come August, on a certain day, every patriotic Indian recalls a moment in History that took place on the stroke of the midnight hour, when a new born nation began to breathe the sweet air of freedom - Independence day, when we succeeded in throwing off the foreign yoke that had subjugated us for 2 centuries. To celebrate the hard won freedom that transformed us from a ‘colony’ to a ‘country’, Amrita TV has put together a host of programmes on the 15th of August.

The day begins with the telecast of the film ‘Company’ at 9.00 am which sees Southern Super star Mohanlal rubbing shoulders with Bollywood megastars Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi& Manisha Koirala. This is followed at 2.00 pm, by the block-buster ‘Thenkassi Pattanam’, a film that raised hilarity to new heights in Malayalam films, a laugh riot in which Dileep gives one of his career best performances, along with Suresh Gopi, Lal & Samyukta Varma.

‘Music Mix’ at 6.30 is a compilation from Malayalam & Hindi movies, a string of well-chosen songs that brim over with patriotic fervor and evoke flashes from the past – of a colonial force that tried to break a country’s spirit, a subject nation that refused to surrender its self-respect, a generation who faced the lathi-blows of imperial fury without flinching so that the next generation may walk with head held high, of a lone khadi-clad figure who brought an empire crashing to its knees- songs that nudge awake the latent sense of nationalism in us and send it surging proudly through our veins.

At 7.00pm, in ‘Lieutenant Colonel Mohanlal’, we spend a half hour with Mohanlal in which he narrates his war-field experiences during the making of Malayalam’s best known war movies Kurukshetra & Kirthichakra, that were shot on location. The Lieutenant Colonel describes the frozen landscapes of Kargil; the courageous men in khakhi who patrol our frontiers; the hardships they face in the sub-zero temperatures of the inhospitable terrain; how they maintain a ceaseless vigil through the long months so that their country men may live in peace, all interspersed with realistic footage from the films.
