Amrita TV calls for entries for "Super Troupe"

To showcase and nurture Gana Mela Troupes (music orchestra groups) through a reality show format, Amrita TV has announced ‘’Super Troupe’’—the first ever such reality show in Malayalam television. Interested gana mela groups will be required to send a CD of their live performances to Amrita TV latest by August 31, 2009.

In Kerala, a thriving but unrecognized performing art is Gana Mela, which has a long history of evolution –with its origins in temple festivals where the local populace could enjoy an evening of entertainment in the midst of the religious and cultural festivities As audience expectations and participation evolved, these groups became a platform to provide mass entertainment by way of concerts across the State, conducted in all public places –besides temples.

Though hundreds of Gana Mela troupes exist in Kerala, they hardly get adequate official recognition. Amrita TV’s ‘Super Troupe’ will attempt to highlight the talent of this music fraternity who have been providing popular enjoyment for so many decades.

Each aspiring Gana Mela group should have 12 members, with an upper age limit of 40 years, with at least 5 singers, two of whom should be female artistes.
