Bangalore, December 17, 2008
Take three parts nature, two parts bike, add a shot of thrill and a dash of statement, on the mountains, pedalled not driven – that's the Tour oF Nilgiris (TFN) for the thirsty adventurer in you. The Tour of Nilgiris is a 919km, 7-day biking (aka bicycling) tour that kicks off at Bangalore on 25th December, 6:30 am, at the Nilgiri's Annual Cake Show with 40 participants taking on the challenge of completing the extreme ride. The Tour of Nilgiris is a first-of-its-kind-in-India sporting event and is a spectacular tour of southern Indian heritage, culture, cuisines and its people.
The Tour of Nilgiris passes through Mysore, Mercara, Sultanbathery, Ooty, Masinagudi and Bandipur across the famed Nilgiri mountain range in the three states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala and finally winds down at Bangalore on New Year's Eve.
The people behind the scenes in this tour are a small group of techies who have worked for four months to make this ride possible for cycling enthusiasts across the country. The Tour of Nilgiris aims to become a premier cycling event on the national sports calendar, making a part of the tour a race from next year.
The 40 participants in the tour are from varied backgrounds: from a professional bicycle rider who is training for the 1,200 km qualifier for the Race Across America to an 11-year-old school boy from Bangalore; from a doctor who says she plays the saxophone to a business man from Pune who is also a scuba diver; from the manager of the Indian cycling team that went to Thailand last year to a barefoot grape farmer from Sangli and members of the Directorate of Adventure from the Indian Air Force.
A qualified medical team from Manipal Hospital is attending to the fitness needs of all 40 riders before and during the tour. Dr Rajat Chauhan, one of the few Musculo-Skeletal Medicine specialists in India, is the Medical Director of the Tour of Nilgiris 2008. Dr Chauhan specializes in Sports & Exercise Medicine and has participated in 31 marathons across the world. He will be assisted on the tour by Dr Renu Arora. The special nutrition for the tour as recommended by the doctors at Manipal Hospital is being provided by Nilgiri's from their vast ready-to-eat range of foods that have the ability to cater to the needs of extreme cyclists.
Speaking on the occasion of announcing the event, Mr Ravi Ranjan, founder trustee of the RideACycle Foundation, who is an avid cycling enthusiast and a respected member of the cycling community in Bangalore said, "The Tour of Nilgiris aims at creating awareness among the general public about the multiple benefits of commuting by the most humble mode of transport – the cycle. The message by these riders is that if such a diverse group can get together and cycle 919 kms then surely people can take up cycling for travelling short distances."
Mr. Ramachandran Prabhu, Director, Nilgiri's, the Title Sponsors and Food Providers to the Tour of Nilgiris, said that "The Tour of Nilgiris is an amalgamation of people from different walks of life, who share a common passion for adventure therefore it goes beyond the cult of cycling and that's why we are delighted to be a part of this magnificent tour. As Title Sponsors and Food Partners of the event, we've ensured that the menu planned fulfils the dietary and nutritional needs of high-endurance bicycle riders."
He further added that, "The food is a mix of the Nilgiri's range of ready-to-eat meals, bakery and dairy products. While many of these items are available at Nilgiri's stores, some of the ready-to-eat meals will be launched during the 1st Quarter of 2009." The Tour of Nilgiris is very proud to be in the unique position to preview some of the ready-to-eat meals from Nilgiri's and provide feedback.
Mr Prabhu was confident that the Nilgiri's "range of food products will provide the participants with the energy and nutrition they need during this tough seven day event while at the same time the variety will keep their palates tingling with anticipation for the 'food-stops' during the tour!"
The Tour of Nilgiris is proud to have Nilgiri's 1905 as its Title Sponsor and Food Caterer, Diet Pepsi as its Associate Sponsor, Wildcraft as its Accessory Partner, Radio Indigo 91.9FM as its Radio Partner, Manipal Hospital as its Medical Assistance Partner, Time Out Bengaluru as its Print Partner and Flaunge as its Documentation Partner.
