Even as the UPA government presented its report card after completing two years in power on Sunday, the 22nd Of May 2011, the people of India have said that they perceive the UPA as the most corrupt government that the nation has ever seen.

In a comprehensive NewsX- CVoter survey on the government's performance over the last two years, almost half the respondents surveyed said that the UPA coalition at the centre has been 'more corrupt' than all previous Indian governments. From 2G to CWG, the spate of scams that have come to light in recent months have significantly tarnished the image of the UPA government. Needless to say, the anti-corruption crusade led by Gandhian activist Anna Hazare has also added requisite fuel to the fire. The scams and the resultant anti-graft crusade for the Lokpal Bill has in fact considerably weakened the UPA's traditional 'aam aadmi' poll-plank.

An overwhelming majority (almost 66%) of respondents today believe that the UPA government has not tended to the aam aadmi seriously, despite the UPA's claiming credit for schemes such as NREGS, mid-day meals, Indira Awaas Yojna and others. Only about a quarter of the respondents said that they believed that the UPA government's efforts were aimed at improving life for the common man.

Significantly, virtually a majority of respondents (55%) said their felt their life was worse today or just remained the same, compared to two years ago.

Despite all this, 66% of respondents said they believed Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh was an effective, trustworthy leader. 66% also said that he should continue as Prime Minister.

The popularity of Rahul Gandhi also seems to have remained untarnished by the rough patch that the UPA government is presently negotiating. In what can only be described as India's continued fascination with the Gandhi family, nearly 63% of the respondents said that they would like to see the Gandhi family scion as the next Prime Minister.

The NewsX- CVoter poll was conducted using national representative random probability sample with a sample size of 1396. The survey was in the field during 18-19th May 2011.
