The campaign will start on November 3 and will go on till December 18.

As of now, 22,455 students are expected to participate in team-based sports events, and 14,967 students, in individual events.

Eight team sport routines and eleven individual sport routines have been planned. A total of 1,635 medals, three trophies and some attractive cash prizes will be given away to the winners.

The idea is to highlight the value of sports education in the lives of children, and teach them the importance of team work, physical exercise and true sportsmanship.

Shailesh Amonkar, chief marketing officer, Sakal Media Group, says, "We have established Schoolympics with (the intention of) creating and providing a sports platform for school-going children. This year, we have started with Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad."

The plan, he adds, is to expand the initiative across Maharashtra and, subsequently, India.

For the record, the eight decade-old media group has both online and offline verticals. Its newspaper Sakal Times, the group claims, produces 1.5 million daily copies in Marathi, 1,00,000 English copies for Pune, and another 1,00,000 copies for bureaucrats and VIPs.
