A 'user-generated meme' on Facebook created a social media wave and brands rode the tide.

What's the 10 year challenge? As Facebook defines it in a twitter post, " the 10 year challenge is a user-generated meme that started on its own without our involvement. It’s evidence of the fun people have on Facebook, and that’s it."

The social media giant's response came following a proposition that it might be an attempt to "train a facial recognition algorithm on aging." However, conspiracies apart, the 'meme' gathered steam and attracted a myriad of reactions leading to what we call today a 'social media wave'.
