ZEE Sports to be launched by mid-2005

Presently, the ZEE group is in the process of acquiring the telecast rights of various sports events

ZEE Telefilms will launch its sports channel by the second quarter of 2005. The channel will offer top-of-the-line national and international sporting activities spread across various genres.

Ashish Kaul, vice-president – corporate brand development, Essel Group, says, “At present, we are in the process of acquiring the telecast rights of various sports events. And as soon as we have a few of them in our kitty, we will be ready to launch the channel.”

He added that ZEE Sports will cover every kind of sports – be it formula 1 racing, water sports, polo, or equestrian, apart from the popular games in India such as football, hockey and cricket.

Meanwhile, the ZEE management is very excited with the Supreme court decision which states that BCCI was performing a public duty under Article 226. The issue relates to ZEE filing a suit against BCCI for canceling the telecast rights of cricket matches awarded earlier to ZEE.

As per Article 226 of the Indian constitution, the aggrieved person may also approach the High Court for relief of enforcing the fundamental rights. Zee Telefilms Limited will now be approaching the High Court to pursue the matter.

The case has been subjudice after ZEE had had originally won the cricket rights by bidding the highest amount of $260 million in September, 2004.
