These two channels are CBeebies, a channel for pre-school children aged below six years, and BBC Entertainment, a channel full of drama, comedy and thrillers
BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), has announced the launch of two new channels on Tata Sky. These two channels are CBeebies and BBC Entertainment.
Interestingly, these two channels will be 12-hour channels, as opposed to the normal 24-hour format. CBeebies will be aired between 6 am and 6 pm, while BBC Entertainment will be available from 6 pm to 6am.
This is the first initiative of BBC Worldwide in India to expand its portfolio of TV channels in both existing and new markets.
BBC Entertainment will include programmes from BBC and other British production houses, including award winning dramas and innovative comedy and thrillers. Some of the well liked hit series include ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Waking the Dead’, ‘Cutting It’, ‘Hotel Babylon’, ‘Silent Witness’, ‘Spooks’, ‘The Inspector Lynley Mysteries’, ‘Extras’, ‘My Life in Film’ and ‘My Family’.
Darren Childs, managing director, BBC Global Channels, remarks, “India has been experiencing explosive economic growth, with the media and entertainment industries playing an integral part. According to recent research, India will be leading the Asian cable market by 2010 and will become one of the most lucrative pay TV markets by 2015. India’s DTH operators are also expected to top those of Japan’s by next year. I think this is the perfect time for BBC Worldwide to unveil CBeebies and BBC Entertainment to Indian audiences and play a vital role in the broadcasting segment amidst the boom.”
BBC World, the 24-hour international news channel from BBC World Limited, has been broadcasting across India since 1991, while the BBC World Service has had a presence on the subcontinent for the last 75 years.
