Aaj Tak, now in the UK

The flagship channel of the TV Today Group forayed into the distribution of Indian news, internationally, in 2005, when it was launched in the US

After taking Asian entertainment to the US in 2005 and to continental Europe last month, Aaj Tak, the 24-hour flagship Hindi news channel of the TV Today Network, has been launched in the UK. The channel has been brought in, along with ARY Digital, Pakistan’s entertainment channel, as a part of the Max Mix bouquet, which comprises SET Max, Sahara One and Sahara Filmy.

In an official communique, Rajan Singh, executive vice-president, international business, Sony Entertainment Television (SET), says, “The addition of these channels shall enhance Max Mix’s position as one of the leading providers of quality Asian entertainment across programming genres. Aaj Tak is a popular news channel and ARY Digital is known for its entertainment, choice and value.”

G Krishnan, CEO and executive director, TV Today Network, says on the occasion of the launch, “Over the last two years, we have been eyeing opportunities in markets with a sizeable Indian diaspora. After US and continental Europe, the UK is the next logical step for us. Launching Aaj Tak on the Max Mix platform will offer viewers live news and analysis from home in their living rooms.”

Aroon Purie, chairman and managing director, TV Today, says, “Aaj Tak has been able to successfully widen the viewership base for news in India. This initiative will further widen the base for Indian news internationally.”

Apart from Aaj Tak, the TV Today Network runs other channels such as Headlines Today, Tez and Dilli Aaj Tak. Headlines Today is targeted at the young urbanite. Tez is the only channel in India which provides news from around the world in 15 minute capsules and is meant for the time-conscious news viewer. Dilli Aaj Tak is the network’s regional offering, covering the nation’s Capital, Delhi, in depth, in a utility based format.
