Sharmista Rijhwani joins SaharaOne as CEO

Rijhwani was earlier managing director at Ten Sports India, where she was hugely instrumental in making the channel popular in South Asia

Sharmista Rijhwani has been appointed chief executive officer for SaharaOne Media and Entertainment’s flagship television channel, Sahara One. She was last working with Ten Sports India as its managing director.

Rijhwani has been working in the media industry for two decades. She started her career with ‘The Indian Express’ where she managed the company’s new strategic ventures. Then she moved to Buena Vista, where she was instrumental in founding and launching some of the prominent television channels in the country, including Disney, ESPN, DIRECTV, Hallmark and Kermit.

For a short period, she also launched and headed Fashion TV. At Ten Sports, Rijhwani changed drastically the image of the channel, which started out as a complete underdog. Under her leadership, Ten Sports emerged as a well-known sports channel in South Asia in less than five years.

Rijhwani says, “The television broadcast industry is evolving and entering a very exciting phase. I look forward to leading SaharaOne as a general entertainment channel, continuing to delight audiences through an offering that is wholesome, refreshing and engaging.”

Commenting on the appointment, Seemanto Roy, head, Sahara One Entertainment, business, says, “Sharmista has wide-ranging experience in the media industry. As we progress to sizeable growth in the general entertainment space, we’ll be looking to her to steer our flagship channel with strategic innovations and take it to the next level.”
