Sun Microsystems stuns the advertising fraternity at MAD Quiz

Last year’s winner Mudra didn’t make it to the finals, while Sun Microsystems who was first runner-up last year sure took the cake this year

The Ad Club of Bombay held its customary MAD Quiz, the seventh one since its start. And for the first time in its history the winner emerged to be a non advertising or media company. Sun Microsystems were ‘M.Adder’ than the rest.

The ambience set up as a casino was in keeping with the theme- Le Casino M.Ad. As with previous quizzes this year too, Derek O’Brien was the quiz master. 28 teams in all participated from spheres of advertising, media and non-advertising and media. The participants included, Mid-Day, Yes Bank, O&M, OgilvyOne Worldwide, JWT, Leo Burnett, Reliance Capital, Sun Microsystems, RK Swamy BBDO, Mudra, IMRB, Law & Kenneth, Asian Paints (two teams), Rediffusion DY&R (two teams), Equus Red Cell, Godrej, Axiz Bank, AMO Communications, Bates David Enterprise, Contract, Euro RSCG, Lowe, Quadrant, STAR TV Matka, STAR TV and Tata Sky.

The preliminary round was conducted as a game of cards where questions were read out in each suit of a pack of cards. Thus eight questions in the club suit, eight questions in the diamond suit and so on. At the end of each suit the answers were discussed and prizes were dole out. At the end of the preliminary round scores were tallied to announce the finalists. Leo Burnett, JWT, Bates David Enterprise, Contract, Sun Microsystems and IMRB were the final six while last year winner Mudra didn’t make it this time.

The final, a buzzer round heated up with the enthusiastic trio from Sun Microsystems giving the leading team, Leo Burnett, a good fight. But guess, Sun Microsystems was in no mood of letting go of the winner prize this year (they lost to Mudra last year) they scored a whopping 23 points. Leo Burnett came second with 12 points.

The main sponsor for the event was Reliance Capital. While Times Now, Yes Bank and Tata Sky were associate sponsors.
