The sales promotions for the week gone by were characterized by their sheer quantity – a function of the festival season. As usual, most of the action was in consumer durables

With this week's roundup falling bang in the middle of the festive season, the promo cup threatens to run over. As usual, we start this week roundup with a look at the action in the durables market.

Allwyn ran a promo for its refrigerators in Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut under which consumers were assured of a 61-cm VIP suitcase with every purchase. This apart, scratch-n-win prizes included 201 Allwyn fridges, 11 Matiz cars, 51 Bajaj scooters, 151 Maxclean washing machines, among others.

Again, for Delhi shoppers, Philips ran the Festival of Gifts offer on CTVs, audio systems and monitors. Gifts included VCDs, Vesta Fun PC cameras and Philips irons. Bumper prizes included cars, bikes and CD systems. In West Bengal, consumers of a Philips mini system or a CTV could win from a cache of over 8,000 prizes - prizes included a Maruti Omni, music systems etc.

The Mumbai consumer had it rich under Daewoo's Aap Banenge Achche Pati offer, which is valid up to Oct 31, 2000. On buying Daewoo frost-free refrigerators and fully automatic washing machines, a Braun MR-400HC blender with chutney and chopping attachment worth Rs 1,945 came free. With Daewoo CTVs, consumers got a Konica Pop BF-8 camera worth Rs 1,350 free. A Borosil 5-piece set worth Rs 1,180 came free with Daewoo microwave ovens.

In Delhi and Bangalore, consumers could avail a discount of up to Rs 3,000 on all Thomson CTVs, under the Shubh Utsav offer. Videocon's scratch-n-win offer continued from the preceding weeks. Onida ran the Triple Dhamaka offer in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Here, on purchasing Onida CTVs, consumers could avail a discount of up to Rs 4,000, avail of a ‘zero down payment' and ‘0 per cent interest' finance scheme and get a five-year extended warranty.

Delhi-based consumers of National washing machines and Panasonic CTVs were eligible of winning prizes that included HT80 home theatre systems, DVD players, headphone stereos and gold coins. The total value of prizes on offer exceeded Rs 2 crore. Samsung's Dasara Diwali Hungama had Karnataka in a tizzy, with price offs on Samsung CTVs, washing machines and fridges.

Sony was running a massive offer on its CTVs in Delhi, Noida, Varanasi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir. Of the prizes that were on offer were a Honda City, a Maruti 800, Sony Playstations, Titan Classic watches etc. Kelvinator's Khulja Sim Sim offer continued from last week.

The purchase of Godrej refrigerators and washing machines gave Mumbai consumers a lot to cheer about. Under the Godrej Luckpati offer, consumers were assured of gifts that included sandwich toasters, ladies watches, hot-n-cold systems etc. This apart, scratch-n-win schemes offered Cash Certificates of up to Rs 1 lakh or trips to exotic Indian locales.

In Delhi, Maharaja Whiteline ran a series of promos. The company was offering a Borosil Casserole set worth Rs 525 free with every OTG worth Rs 2,795; a Rs 500 discount was being offered on every Ultimate juicer-mixer-grinder worth Rs 2,850; a Royal Crystal 6-piece glass set worth Rs 900 came free with every Maharaja Whiteline OTG 26 L worth Rs 3,495; and with every Supremo DLX food processor, there was a 1-gm gold coin for the consumer.

Inalsa too had a scheme for the Delhi shopper - its food processor fetched a free toaster-griller worth Rs 1,495. The Delhi consumer also had the luxury of getting two food processors and a handblender on buying a Braun Combimax. Kenstar was offering a mixer grinder worth Rs 3,395 along with its microwave oven.

Citizen had a special Diwali offer for shoppers in Delhi, Gurgaon, Dehradun and Meerut - a discount of up to Rs 500 on its watches. On the other hand, in Bangalore, Timex was offering discounts of up to Rs 555 on its watches. Luminous was offering a discount of up to Rs 5,740 on its power inverter in the Delhi and NCR regions. In Bangalore, consumers who bought a Kurl-On mattress and wrote a slogan were eligible of winning prizes that ranged from a Ford Ikon, four home PCs and 15 refrigerators, among others.

Olympus had a set of offers on in Chennai. On buying the Olympus IS-300 camera, shoppers got a converter lens worth Rs 3,000 free; the Olympus Superzoom 700 BF camera had two Konica film rolls as freebies, while the Olympus Trip MD3 camera had one Konica film roll. Not to be outdone, Kodak was offering three Kodak Max rolls free with every Kodak KB10 camera. In Karnataka, the purchase of select models of Ricoh camera got consumers attractive gifts.

Lots of promos in textiles and apparel…In Delhi, purchasing any two Newport wrinkle-free pants or jeans got consumers a cotton shirt worth Rs 499. Again, in the Capital, shoppers purchasing Allen Solly garments worth Rs 3,000 got a Allen Solly Khaki shirt worth Rs 845 free. In Bangalore, consumers who purchased any two Oxemberg garments with a combined worth of over Rs 1,000 got a shirt worth Rs 399 free.

In Mumbai, the purchase of any Vivaldi shirt or trouser fetched consumers a Vivaldi Featherlite shirt for just Rs 51. In Calcutta, the Bombay Dyeing scheme ran a wee bit different - here, the incentive was two Vivaldi Polo T-shirts worth Rs 490 for just Rs 99. In Ahmedabad, shoppers who bought any two Louis Philippe garments (shirts or trousers) got a trendy travel bag worth Rs 600 free. While back in Mumbai, Van Heusen was giving away an imported Van Heusen wrinkle-free shirt worth Rs 795 with every purchase of Van Heusen garments worth Rs 2,000.

Meanwhile, Bata was promising consumers ‘mega prizes' with every pair of Bata shoes purchased. The eligibility criterion was answering four questions. Prizes ranged from a trip to Bangkok for two, a Matiz, personal computers and hundreds of consolation prizes.

In automotives, there was a free gold coin that came with every Toyota Qualis; while in Bangalore, the Suzuki Samurai was cheaper by Rs 3,000 and the Suzuki Max 100 R was cheaper by Rs 2,000.

In foods and beverages, Coca-Cola was offering two 5-Star chocolate bars with every 1.5 litre PET bottle of Coke in the Delhi and NCR regions. Coke was also running a scratch card promo in Delhi - on offer were LG refrigerators, Titan watches, Prestige pressure cookers etc. Pepsi was giving away a Polo free with every 500 ml Pepsi PET bottle. Bisleri was promising an extra 200 ml of mineral water with its 1.2 litre PET bottle. In Bangalore, Cadbury India was offering a Perk Slims free with every 27 gm Perk Real chocolate. The Kaun Banega Crorepati offer from Britannia continued from previous weeks.

The other prominent promotions of the week were as follows:

Birla Yamaha portable generators were cheaper by Rs 4,000 in Bangalore. Again in Bangalore, purchase of a Honda genset got consumers gold coins of up to 5 gm. In Mumbai, every Hawkins pressure cooker came with another Hawkins pressure cooker. The Godrej Storwel came at a discount of up to Rs 1,234. The 500-gm pack of Surf Excel came with an additional 20 per cent of free detergent. While the Epson Stylus Color 480 printer got buyers in Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur and Amritsar a free 12-gm silver coin, and also made them eligible to win gifts from a pool worth over Rs 20 lakh.
