Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar has announced the appointment of Prem Kumar as vice-president, national circulation and market development.

Kumar has no prior experience in media; before this, he was with Glaxo for 14 years. In his 27 year career, he has led marketing initiatives at many leading FMCG companies such as Toshiba, Gillette and Glaxo Smithkline. He has vast experience of marketing, sales and distribution in the sector and has handled international markets, including China, Sri Lanka and some Southeast Asian countries, dealing in FMCG and healthcare products that required intensive distribution in both urban and rural markets.

Speaking to afaqs, Kumar says, “When I came to India from Sri Lanka, I was looking for a dynamic and innovative organisation. I found that Bhaskar fitted the bill perfectly. The company is open towards people from outside, so it has a fresh perspective towards things. My goal will be to pace up Bhaskar’s growth and further strengthen its position.”

Talking about the growing opportunities in regional media, Kumar adds, “Since the last decade, regional media has started opening up to change and Bhaskar has led this growth. There are lots of opportunities to reach out to the market in this sector.”

In an official communiqué, Rajiv Jaitly, president, sales and marketing, says, “Bhaskar has always been known for great circulation buildup and innovative approaches. And Prem, with his experience and insightful strategic inputs, will further strengthen these.”

For the record, Dainik Bhaskar launched its Bhopal edition 50 years ago. Its footprint now covers 43 cities. It recently launched DB STAR, a compact daily newspaper in Bhopal, and will soon launch Business Bhaskar’s first edition there, too. Both these new titles are slated for launch across major urban centres covered by the brand.
