Ibibo members to compile songs for Michael Jackson album

Sony BMG, which is producing the compilation, has created a Michael Jackson group on Ibibo. Group members will vote for their favourite tracks of the legendary singer

Sony BMG, the music entertainment company, is using the participative power of social media to produce Michael Jackson’s new music album, which will be a compilation of his most popular songs selected through an online voting process.

Sony BMG has tied up with Ibibo.com, a social networking site, and created a Michael Jackson group on it. More than 100 songs of Jackson have been uploaded on the website. Members of Ibibo.com who want to participate or choose their favourite songs have to join the group. They can listen to the songs available on the site and vote for their favourite tracks.

Tracks from popular albums such as Thriller, Dangerous, Off the Wall, History and Bad have been uploaded. The tracks that get the most votes will be released in a two-CD album called Michael Jackson – The King of Pop.

In an official communiqué, Sridhar Subramanian, managing director, Sony BMG India, says, “The music album will be a first of its kind in India because the song tracks will be a selection 'of the people, for the people and by the people'.”

Speaking to afaqs!, Ashish Kashyap, chief executive officer, Ibibo.com, says, “As yet, more than 1,400 members have registered with the group to participate in the voting process. The idea behind launching such a voting process on our website lies in the fact that Ibibo.com wants to engage its members with entertainment related content and give them an opportunity to showcase their talent as well.”

The website will award 100 users who participate in the voting process. Kashyap indicates that the website will keep on with more such activities in the future.

Once the album is released, it will be promoted through online marketing and below-the-line advertising.
