GEC watch: STAR Plus widens the gap with Colors

In Week 5 of the year, STAR Plus has managed to race far ahead of its competitor Colors

The ratings calendar of Week 5 of 2009 brings out some significant developments in the general entertainment space. TAM’s weekly report suggests that overall, the general entertainment channel (GEC) genre has garnered 1216 GRPs. STAR Plus, with 317 GRPs, has distanced itself from close competitor, Colors.

STAR Plus has garnered 26 per cent relative share, a 2 per cent increase from last week, adding 24 GRPs and standing firm at the No. 1 position. Colors, meanwhile, has lost 15 GRPs, retaining its second place. Its relative share has decreased by 2 percentage points from last week and stands at 22 per cent.

Balika Vadhu on Colors, which was last week’s top rated show has seen a decline in TVR from 8.35 in Week 4 to 7.3 in Week 5. On the contrary, Bidaayi on STAR plus regained its number one position this week with a TVR of 8.98. Last week it was the No.2 show with a TVR of 7.7.

Besides, the other show that has worked for STAR Plus is the Annual Screen Awards, which was aired on Sunday at 8 pm. The awards show garnered a TVR of 4.8. Its dance reality show, Nach Baliye, is inching towards the finals. From a TVR of 2.13 in Week 4, the show garnered 2.74 in Week 5.

The new show on STAR Plus, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai has garnered a TVR of 6.5, having replaced Jai Shri Krishna from the No.3 slot. Jai Shri Krishna garnered a TVR of 5.5.

Meanwhile, Zee TV also had a decline in its GRPs from 221 to 209. Its channel share stands at 17 per cent. Its new reality dance show, Dance India Dance, had a good beginning and features in the top 10 most watched programmes – with a TVR of 3.5.

Sony has maintained its place at No. 4 with 75 GRPs and a relative share of 6 per cent. STAR One and NDTV Imagine continue their battle for the No. 5 position, with a relative share of 5 per cent each. Their GRPs are 63 and 61 respectively.

Inclusion of new shows hasn’t had an impact on NDTV Imagine’s GRPs. Sahara One and SAB have garnered 4 per cent share each. Sahara One has garnered 49 GRPs, while SAB managed 47 GRPs. 9X, with 3 per cent relative share and STAR Utsav, with 2 per cent share, have maintained their shares.

Some of the other top programmes on GECs in the last week were Aap Ki Kachehri (3.84) and Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil (3.5) on STAR Plus;, Jeevan Saathi (3.6) and Uttaran (3.54) on Colors; and Chhoti Bahu on Zee (4.13).
