Umesh Kumar to quit Open magazine

Kumar will move out of the company by year end, to start his own venture

Umesh Kumar will quit Open Media Network, the publications division of RPG Group, by December end. Kumar joined the RPG group in August 2008 as publisher and business head.

The creation of Open Media Network marked the entry of the group into the media space and its first product, a weekly current affairs and features magazine, Open was launched in April this year. Kumar put in his papers in early September.

"I wanted to explore something of my own. I'm getting into something which is very different from what I have done in the past", says Kumar on his decision to move on. He had been toying with the idea for some time and felt that the opportunity was ripe now, he adds.

Kumar has over two decades of experience in advertising and marketing. He moved to Open Media Network from India Today group, where he was the marketing head and associate publisher. He spent five years at India Today. Kumar holds a degree in civil engineering from IIT, Delhi and a post graduate diploma in management from IIM, Bangalore. In the past, he has worked with Thomson, Mudra and Rediffusion DY&R as well.

The RPG Group has an annual turnover of Rs 14,000 crore, in interests ranging from retail to IT.
