Chithiram, an info-edutainment kids' channel, will be launched on June 03

Kalaignar TV, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam backed TV network, is all set to launch a kids' channel called Chithiram. Focusing on info-edutainment for kids, the Tamil channel will be rolled out on June 03.

Chithiram will be the sixth channel from Kalaignar TV. Its existing channels are: Kalaignar TV (general entertainment channel), Isai Aruvi (music), Seythigal (news), Sirippoli (comedy) and Kalaignar Asia (catering to Tamil viewers in Southeast Asian countries).

Speaking to afaqs!, a senior official at Kalaignar TV, says, "We launched our flagship GEC, Kalaignar TV in 2007. Subsequently, we added other genre-specific channels, including music, news and comedy channels, to our network. We are further enhancing our network offering, by adding another genre (kids) to our existing bouquet of five channels."

Chithiram will showcase internationally acquired content, as well as in-house productions by Kalaignar TV. To begin with, the kids' channel will focus on animation and cartoon shows. It has acquired rights of popular international shows, such as Zodiac Kingdom, Kung Fu Story and Ruffs Patch.

The channel has also lined up a number of studio-based offerings, where kids act as hosts. Other attractions for children include story-based programmes hosted by popular Tamil TV and film celebrities.

The spokesperson also shares that the channel will rely heavily on Tamil culture and literature to educate and entertain children. For instance, a special programme will familiarise kids with couplets by celebrated Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar.

Going forward, the info-edutainment channel plans to mount quiz shows and special news bulletins for children. The news bulletins will touch upon subjects appealing to children, such as information about popular holiday destinations.

Kalaignar TV is using its own network to promote the soon-to-be-launched channel. It has introduced special cartoon characters on its flagship GEC, Kalaignar TV in a bid to attract children. It is running teasers of its special shows on the channel as a curtain-raiser for the launch.
