NYF unveils New Directors competition
The competition was initiated to recognise extraordinary creative work and the ability to garner international exposure executed by commercial film directors, especially those who have recently launched their directorial careers.

Entries in the New Directors competition will be judged by the elite Executive Jury, comprising 36 international chief creative officers. Trophies for the same will be awarded at the two-day festival to be held in New York City, on May 4-5.

Michael Demetriades, executive director, New York Festivals International Advertising Awards, says in an official communiqué, "For the first time in the history of New York Festivals, the spotlight will be on emerging directorial talent. After numerous discussions with the international production community, this new competition was launched to provide new directors with an opportunity to have their creative body of work recognised by the international advertising community."

The competition aims to level the playing field by allowing upcoming directorial talent (that is, those who are in business for no more than three years) to compete against one another for the award.

The directors vying for the award are required to submit five single samples of their work executed for different brands, a history of any award received during the last three years, and a short description of the run-up to their directorial debut. The entry fee for participation is US$595 for five single samples.

New York Festivals International Advertising Awards will offer a special extended entry deadline (April 15) for submissions to this new competition. Winners will be announced at the International Advertising Awards 2011.

The Executive Jury, comprising a plethora of top-notch CCOs, will convene during May 1-5 in New York City. This is where the trophy winners (from the shortlisted entries selected by the Grand Jury) will be selected. Donald Gunn, founder, The Gunn Report, will moderate the Executive Jury.

The NYF International Advertising Awards 2011 will take place on May 4-5 at the Skylight West, in New York City. This two-day event will feature keynote speakers, including a talk by Keith Reinhard, chairperson emeritus of Omnicom.

There will be creative panel discussions, screenings and gallery exhibits as well as the presentation of the NYF Lifetime Achievement Award to Reinhard; The Living Legend Awards will be presented to renowned film director Bob Giraldi, and film editor Bob Carr.
