IRS Q2, 2012: Deccan Chronicle, DNA & Mumbai Mirror register growth
Both TOI and HT have lost marginal readers.
The country's largest English daily The Times of India has lost a marginal 9,000 readers in this quarter of IRS. Its closest competitor, the No. 2 English daily Hindustan Times, has also lost 38,000 readers. While the average issue readership (AIR) for TOI stands at 76.43 lakh, HT is almost half its size at 37.67 lakh.
The ABP Group's English daily and east India's leading English newspaper, The Telegraph has also lost 17,000 readers in the current quarter. Its AIR in the current round stands at 12.75 lakh.
Deccan Chronicle, at No. 5, is the only daily in the top five list to have recorded growth. The English daily has added a marginal 11,000 readers in the current quarter. Deccan Chronicle fights The Hindu in the southern markets and its AIR is less than half of that of The Hindu (10.38 lakh).
Mumbai-based DNA has also had a good quarter. It has added 21,000 readers, taking its AIR to 9.3 lakh.
Another Mumbai-based tabloid, the Mumbai Mirror, has added 18,000 readers, while its closest competitor Mid-Day, which is now under Dainik Jagran, is out of the top 10 list. Mumbai Mirror has recorded an AIR of 7.95 lakh.
Following Mumbai Mirror is another BCCL daily - The Economic Times with an AIR of 7.89 lakh. The business daily, though, has maintained a status quo, having lost a marginal 3,000 readers in the current quarter.
In the top 10 list, the other two publications are The New Indian Express and The Tribune. The Indian Express has lost 11,000 readers, while Punjab-based The Tribune has added 16,000 readers. The AIRs for the newspapers are 6.67 lakh and 6.4 lakh, respectively.
