The channel which was running on standard definition (SD) for about a year now, will replace the existing feed with a High Definition (HD) one.

Kerala Kaumudy Group, owners of the Malayalam newspaper by the same name, had launched a general news and entertainment channel, Kaumudy TV, about a year ago. The group now plans to replace the SD feed with an HD one, beginning April 14.

The signals initially had some glitches which have now been smoothened; hence the decision to go HD. The channel will continue to be available in Kerala and on Dish TV, across the country. Outside India, the channel is available in the Gulf.

The channels' programming line-up has a mix of news and entertainment content. News makes up about 40 per cent of the total programming. The morning is devoted entirely to news while entertainment - made up of reality and film-based news - is telecast on the afternoon and evening primetime slots.

The channel explains that there is a lot of competition in the market and the channel is expecting a major positive impact in revenue terms once the HD feed becomes available.

For the record, the group was established in 1911 when the newspaper was launched.

According to those familiar with the TV space of Kerala, the channels in the pipeline include names like Media One, scheduled to be launched in August this year, Zee Malayalam, Asianet Chiri, Janapriya TV and Kairali Arabia, apart from the two channels by Mathrubhumi.
