The annual Emvie (or media value) Awards - awarded for creative excellence and innovation in the field of media planning and buying - are to be given away this evening at a function organized by the Bombay Ad Club. The award ceremony, which will be held at Mumbai's Taj Mahal Hotel, marks the second Emvie Awards as far Indian advertising is concerned. It might be recalled that the Emvie made its India debut last year, as a part of the India Advertising Festival - Synergy 2001, where it was bundled with the Effies and the Abby Awards.

agencyfaqs! has gathered that in all, some 80-odd entries are in contention for recognition in four categories - Media Strategy, Media Research, Media Innovation and Media Marketer. This year's jury panel includes Chintamani Rao (Universal McCann), Meenakshi Madhvani (Carat India), L.S. Nayak (STAR India), Sandeep Goyal (Zee Network), Sam Balsara (Madison Communications) and Mohini Bhullar (India Today), apart from consultants Praveen Tripathi and Dorab Sopariwala. And brands/campaigns that are in the fray include Maruti Versa, Van Heusen, Pepsodent and Colgate Fresh Energy Gel.

Surfers at agencyfaqs! will recollect that last year, HTA had made a significant impression at the Emvies, picking up one gold Emvie (joint winner with Initiative Media) for De Beers Celebration Diamonds in the Media Strategy & Implementation category, one silver Emvie for 3 Roses Perfect Couple (also in the Media Strategy & Implementation category) and one commendation for Parle Family Day (in the Media Invention category).

While Initiative Media had shared a gold with HTA (in the Media Strategy & Implementation category) for Britannia 50:50, O&M had won a gold Emvie (in the Media Research category) for a study titled Measuring Passion. O&M also won a commendation in the Media Strategy & Implementation category. In the Media Invention category, direct marketing firm Select Direct won a gold Emvie for Locator, a manual for reaching architects and interior decorators. MTV picked up a silver Emvie in this category for its MTV Bakra Din concept.

While the excitement around the event is nowhere near Abby-levels (naturally), there is no doubting that, at least among media professionals, there is considerable debate over what would (or should) end up winning. It's for the evening's function to answer.
