EMVIES 2003: WPP Media is Media Agency of the Year

The predictable happened. The agency with the most number of shortlisted entries walked away with the coveted trophy as well

The Ballroom at the Taj Land's End in suburban Bandra, Mumbai, was packed with WPP Media executives. Buyers and planners who otherwise operate in the blinkered world of numbers shed their inhibitions for once to cheer winning team mates with whistles, horns, trumpets and drums. It was indeed party-time for WPP Media.

The agency was adjudged the Media Agency of the Year at the Bombay Ad Club-organised EMVIE Awards ceremony yesterday, edging past last year's winners Lodestar with a comfortable margin of 25 points. The final tally - Lodestar 20 points, and WPP Media 45 points.

Not surprisingly, WPP had winners in every category except for Media Innovation - TV and Media Innovation - Outdoor. In Media Innovation - TV, there were three joint silver winners in Lodestar for Whirlpool, Khulja Sim Sim, MediaCom for Arrow, Vodka Chasers and Madison for Tide, C.I.D copy.

Euro RSCG had a field day in the category of Media Innovation - Outdoor with the silver going to its campaign on World Aids Day and the gold going to the Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan DM exercise for MAX, targeted at media planners and buyers through the innovative use of Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan look-alikes who visited different agencies propagating the message of the film festival featuring the two stars in an unusual manner.

Coming back to WPP, the agency bagged the silver EMVIE in the category of Media Strategy for the relaunch of Lifebuoy. Joint silver winners included Lodestar for Zod Club-wear and Zenith Media for LML Freedom.

Media Innovation - Cinema was the clincher for WPP with the silver going to Tata Safari for the pinnacle placement it enjoyed in the movie Road (the movie was shot in a Tata Safari and featured prominently in the footage) and the gold going to Close-up Couple Corners for the clutter-busting solution of having two cushioned chairs with no armrests in between in theatres across Mumbai.

WPP bagged silver EMVIES in the categories of Media Innovation - Internet for IBM,

Media Innovation - Print for Pepsi aha and Kodak Moments, and Media Innovation - Radio for Kodak Moments FM. The gold in the radio category went to Lodestar for Scorpio Live.

In Media Research there were three joint silvers in Madison for Town & Country, MediaCom for Horlicks and WPP Media for Viewmatrix.

The Media Marketer of the Year was awarded to Malayala Manorama, the only representative in the category. © 2003 agencyfaqs!
