HP gets into Street Art in Singapore

Why the printing company wants to be the go-between for artists, brands and consumers

Graffiti on a Singapore street would have seemed like a pipedream just a few years ago thanks to its strict government rules.

All that is changing now as the government and its citizens embrace more modern and disruptive art forms. For example, graffiti is now allowed in the country but is kept to designated spaces. HP’s support – first as a sponsor and then as a partner – in the “Art from the Streets” exhibition (to be displayed at the Arts Science Museum in the city-state) signals a significant intention.

HP’s history is steeped in print. As a result, it remains close to the creative community. However, it is still a ‘traditional’ technology provider and it is this innovation and the brand’s position as a technology provider that has made HP believe that it can create a new ecosystem between the art on the streets and the products in its houses.

HP is working with Jogjakarta-based street artist Eko to create products out of his designs alongside the event. And is now taking it to the streets to the people and reaching out to the man (and woman) in the street as well as other brands, faster.

HP is “talking to a few brands” about how it “can amalgamate getting art on products that consumers can get on a regular basis..”
