Chairman and managing director of Mathrubhumi newspaper group, MP Veerendrakumar has been elected chairman of the board of directors of the Press Trust India (PTI). He succeeds Vineet Kumar Jain, managing director, The Times of India group. A former MP, Veerendrakumar has served as the Union Minister of State of Finance and Labour and is the deputy president of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS).
Simultaneously, Philip Mathew, managing editor of Malayala Manorama group, has been elected vice-chairman. Jain, N Ravi (The Hindu), Shekhar Gupta (The Indian Express), and two public service directors, Justice HR Khanna, former judge of the Supreme Court, and eminent physicist EV Chitnis were re-elected to the board.
Pravinchandra V Gandhi (Janmabhoomi group), Vijay Kumar Chopra (Hind Samachar), Shobhana Bhartia (Hindustan Times), CR Irani (The Statesman), Aveek Sarkar (Anand Bazaar Patrika) and R Lakshmipathy (Dinamalar) are the other members of the board.
