Elon Musk-led Tesla will open its first showroom in India on July 15, with Mumbai chosen as the debut location, Reuters reported. The launch marks Tesla’s entry into India’s fast-growing electric vehicle market and comes as the company steps up efforts to establish a presence in the world’s third-largest automotive market.

In March, Tesla reportedly finalised a lease agreement for the Mumbai showroom, setting the stage for its expansion plans in India.

Citing a Bloomberg report from last month, the first Tesla vehicles shipped to India are Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs built at the company’s Shanghai factory. As per the report, Tesla has imported five Model Y units to Mumbai from its Shanghai plant. Each vehicle is valued at around Rs. 2.77 million ($31,988). The imports attracted over Rs. 2.1 million in duties per vehicle, reflecting India’s 70% import tariff on fully built electric cars priced below $40,000, along with additional levies.

A few months back, the EV maker ramped up hiring for its India operations, with plans for another showroom in the Delhi-NCR region.
