Yahoo India appoints Gurmit Singh as MD

He will report to Yvonne Chang, VP and head of Yahoo India and South East Asia.

In a recent development, Yahoo India has appointed Gurmit Singh as managing director.

Singh will oversee Yahoo's business in India and will be responsible for its growth in the country. He will report to Yvonne Chang, vice-president and head of India and Southeast Asia, Yahoo.

Singh joins Yahoo India from Network18, where he was chief executive officer of Forbes India.

Chang says, "Gurmit comes to Yahoo with a strong track record of delivering growth. His understanding of users and advertisers will be a great asset for Yahoo as we bring a number of product innovations to India. Yahoo is a loved brand in India, and we are very happy to have a leader of Gurmit's calibre leading the team."

Commenting on his new assignment, Singh says, "An internet industry pioneer, Yahoo is now at a very exciting point in its journey. It truly reflects the energy and spirit of the world's largest start up. Working together with an extraordinary team in India and colleagues across the world, I am looking forward to unlocking the full potential of Yahoo products and services in India."

With over 20 years of experience, Singh brings with him a deep understanding of the media and entertainment industry in India. Singh, who is a university gold medallist in mechanical engineering from the Osmania University, Hyderabad, completed MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi, in 1993. He started his career with FMCG major Marico Industries. After five years of FMCG sales and brand management at Marico, he moved on to Sony Music to handle the sales and marketing of the North zone for the company.

During his career, Singh has also worked with the India Today Group as business director, Music Today, where he was credited with expanding the label to the film genre, starting the music events division, and two new labels -- one for the youth and the other in the economy segment. During his tenure at the India Today Group, he also initiated the books and home video division.
