Amazon India strikes deal with Dharma Productions

Amazon Prime Video India's licensing deal with Dharma Productions is for streaming the latter's upcoming releases, as well as its previous titles.

Amazon and Dharma Productions, an Indian production and distribution company, have announced a long-term agreement that will make the yet-to-be-launched Prime Video India, the subscription-streaming platform for upcoming new releases and previous titles from Dharma Productions. The digital premiere for new Dharma Production releases on Prime Video will include films like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ok Jaanu, and Badrinath Ki Dulhania.

For members of Amazon Prime, which offers features like unlimited free and fast delivery on products, and early access to top deals, Prime Video is a feature that provides access to unlimited streaming content on a subscription basis. The launch date of Prime Video in India is yet to be announced.

Nitesh Kripalani, director and country head, Amazon Video India, says, "We are excited to have Dharma Productions' library and its future slate of titles for the upcoming launch of Prime Video. We know our 'Prime' members are going to love the broad selection of films and stories."

Apoorva Mehta, chief executive officer, Dharma Productions, adds, "We at Dharma, felt that the time couldn't be more right for us to mark our presence on such sought after platforms. We are confident that partnering with a credible brand like Amazon will go a long way in ensuring that our content will not only be seamlessly streamed, but will also see a huge demand from users of Prime Video."

The library of films on Prime Video will also have other Dharma titles such as Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Student of the Year, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Agneepath, Kapoor & Sons, Brothers, Shaandaar, and Gori Tere Pyar Mein.

In the United States, customers who pay $99 a year for free two-day shipping under Amazon Prime, receive access to Amazon Prime Video. While the launch date of Amazon Video in India is not yet confirmed, the above deal has given rise to speculation that it may happen sooner than later.
